Mason Greenwood attempted rape charges dropped

Mason Greenwood, a forward for Manchester United, was accused of attempted rape, coercive behavior, and assault. According to the CPS, “there was no longer a realistic possibility of conviction” as a result of the withdrawal of key witnesses and newly discovered evidence.

In 2022, the 21-year-old was detained due to suspicions including pictures and videos.

Later, he was accused of trying to rape a woman, acting in a controlling and coercive manner, and assault resulting in serious bodily damage.

In January 2022—just over a year ago—the inquiry got under way. November 27 of this year has been designated as the trial date.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the charges were dropped when crucial witnesses backed out of the case.

In a brief statement issued on his behalf, Greenwood said: “I would like to thank my family, loved ones, and friends for their support. I am pleased that this matter is finally finished.

“At this time, no other comment will be made.”

Manchester United statement on Mason Greenwood, “Manchester United notes the decision of Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will mow conduct its own process before determining next steps”

According to BBC, they were aware that Greenwood won’t resume training or playing until this procedure is finished.

The announcement that Greenwood would no longer be subject to criminal prosecution was deemed “only fair” by Greater Manchester Police.

According to Ch Supt Michaela Kerr, the choice had “not been made lightly.”

She added: “I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate the force’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them.”

On January 30 of last year, United made the announcement that he will not resume training or participate in any games “until further notice.”

Greenwood’s endorsement agreement with Nike was also put on hold and eventually canceled, and Electronic Arts revealed that he had been dropped off the active rosters of their FIFA 22 game.

The youngster, who is from Bradford, graduated from the United academy and made his senior debut in a win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in March 2019.

He played in England’s Nations League encounter against Iceland in September 2020, earning his only senior cap.
